It is in the tradition of the Church of Mexico that on December 9, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to an Aztec Indian, by the name of Juan Diego at Tepeyac, a hill in the northwest section of Mexico City.
To help convince the bishop of the truth of the appearance of Mary, she told Juan Diego three days later to pick flowers and bring them to the bishop. Before the bishop he presented the roses and, as they cascaded from his tilma there on the coarse tilma was the image of Our Lady, known from that day on as Our Lady of Guadalupe.
God of power and mercy, you blessed the Americas at Tepeyac with the presence of the Virgin Mary at Guadalupe.
May her prayers help all men and women to accept each other as brothers and sisters. Through your justice present in our hearts may your peace reign in the world.
