John Neumann

John Neumann was an immigrant to our shores destined by God for spiritual success in the United States. Born in Bohemia in 1811, he migrated here as a seminarian and was ordained as a priest for the diocese of New York in 1836.

Later, in 1842, he joined the newly founded American Redemptorist Community where he served as pastor and held offices of major importance.

On March 28, 1852, John Neumann was consecrated bishop of Philadelphia. History recalls him as a pastoral bishop, who nurtured Catholic education, personally cared for the poor and established the Forty Hours Eucharistic Devotion throughout his diocese.

He died at the age of 48 on January 5, 1860. On June 19, 1977, John Neumann became the first American bishop to be canonized.
