A short reflection on the lessons of St. Francis
800 years is a long time in human terms. In God’s eyes, however, it is but the blink of an eye. Our beloved saint died 800 years ago today. For most people, there would be very few, if any, who still remembered them. That is not the case with Francis. Even after all this time, his legacy lives on.
Francis is an example to us of so many things. Today we will reflect on just a few of them.
First, Francis shows us that change is possible. Despite his footloose youth, he responded to the Lord’s call and embraced a total conversion. Sin does not have the final word. Grace does.
Next, Francis taught us love for creation. Unlike pantheists, who believe that creation is God, Francis shows us that creation reflects the wonder, the beauty, and the power of God. We must respect and reverence all creatures, especially humans, as a reflection of God.
Third, Francis reminds us of the value of detachment. His commitment to “Lady Poverty” is an example to us that, while the goods of this world are indeed good, we should not be attached to them. Our love for God and others must come first.
We can also look to Francis as a model of prayer. He loved both public and private prayer, celebrating with his brothers and spending time in solitude.
Lastly, Francis teaches us about trust. From his conversion to his death, Francis exhibited a trust in God that was remarkable. He surrendered everything in life to the Providence of God, and his example invites us to do the same.
This week, as we celebrate the life and legacy of St. Francis, let us pray for his intercession and for his help in becoming more like him.
