St. Joachim is the patron saint of fathers, grandfathers, and grandparents
St. Joachim’s feast day is July 26
According to ancient Christian tradition preserved in the Protoevangelium of St. James, Joachim was the husband of St. Anne and the father of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through his daughter Mary, Joachim became the grandfather of Jesus Christ. Although he is not mentioned in the Gospels, the Church has long honored him for his role in salvation history and as an example of faithful trust in God.
The story of St. Joachim
Tradition tells us that Joachim and Anne were a devout Jewish couple who longed for a child but remained childless for many years. Despite their disappointment, they remained faithful to God and persevered in prayer.
According to tradition, God answered their prayers by granting them a daughter, Mary, who would become the Mother of Jesus. Joachim’s steadfast faith and obedience helped prepare the way for the coming of Christ. Together, Joachim and Anne provided Mary with a loving and faithful home in which she could grow in holiness and devotion to God.
Veneration of St. Joachim
Devotion to St. Joachim developed alongside devotion to St. Anne in both the Eastern and Western Churches. By the Middle Ages, Christians throughout Europe honored Joachim as the father of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a model of family life and trust in God’s providence.
St. Joachim is honored in the Church because he was chosen by God, along with his wife Anne, for a privileged role in the salvation of humanity. He helped raise Mary, who would become the Mother of God, and thereby played an important part in God’s plan of redemption. He is the patron saint of fathers, grandfathers, and grandparents, and his feast day is celebrated on July 26.

O Lord, God of our fathers,
who bestowed on Saints Joachim and Anne this grace, that of them should be born the Mother of your incarnate Son, grant, through the prayers of both, that we may attain the salvation you have promised to your people.
