Trust in God’s Word

Francis’ time on Mount Subiaso became a period of deep discernment. He had first heard the voice of Jesus telling him to “rebuild my church,” and he initially understood this as a literal command. In time, however, he came to recognize the deeper meaning: he was being called to renew the faith of a people who had grown complacent in their belief and practice.

As we reflected last week, solitude can be difficult, but it also prepares us to hear God’s voice more clearly. On February 24, 1208, after an extended time in prayer, Francis attended Mass and heard a passage from the Gospel of Matthew in which Jesus sends out the Apostles on mission. He instructed them to preach that the Kingdom of God is at hand and to go forth without gold, silver, or extra provisions, trusting instead that their needs would be met.

According to Thomas of Celano, Francis was deeply moved by these words and declared, “This is what I wish, this is what I am seeking, this I long with all my inmost heart to do.” He immediately embraced this call. Removing his shoes, setting aside his staff, and clothing himself in a simple tunic, Francis began to preach repentance. In this moment, he fully embraced a life of poverty, a defining mark of the Franciscan way.

Francis’ time in solitude had prepared him to recognize and respond to God’s word. As the “poor little man,” he placed his trust entirely in God’s providence, confident that the Lord would supply all that he needed.

This week, let us listen more attentively for God’s voice in our lives. May we trust His word, respond with generosity, and follow where He leads, even when it calls us beyond our comfort.
