Trust in God’s protection – the leper

We know, and may have experienced ourselves, that conversion is a gradual process. Even when God touches us deeply and draws us closer to Himself, that initial fervor is rarely permanent. While such moments can be life-changing, putting a renewed love of God into practice takes time, patience, and perseverance.

One of the significant obstacles Francis faced in his ongoing conversion was his fear and revulsion toward lepers. In his time, lepers were social outcasts, forced to live outside the city so as not to spread disease. Francis avoided passing through their colonies, and his biographer notes that he would cover his nose and mouth because of the smell.

As his conversion progressed, Francis understood that this fear had to be overcome. One day, he encountered a leper and chose to approach him. Francis not only gave the man alms but also embraced and kissed him. Through God’s grace, he was able to see Christ in the leper and move beyond his fear. This moment marked another decisive turning point in his life. Trusting that God would protect him, Francis acted with courage and compassion.

When we encounter situations or people whom we find difficult to accept, we are invited to follow Francis’ example. God calls us to recognize Christ in every person and to trust that His grace will sustain us when we face what frightens or unsettles us.

This week, let us ask for the grace to see Christ in those we struggle to accept. Trusting in God’s protection, may we respond to fear with compassion and allow His love to guide our actions.
