Trust in Wealth

Most of what we know about the life of St. Francis comes from the period after his conversion, when he dedicated himself to serving the Lord and the poor. In his early years, however, Francis placed a great deal of trust in the wealth and material possessions his family provided.

Accounts of his youth describe a young man who enjoyed fine clothing and had a particular vice when it came to food. He became accustomed to well-prepared meals and was even selective about the china on which they were served, at times refusing to eat if he disliked the plates.

Francis did not keep his family’s riches entirely to himself.  He was generous with his friends, often paying for outings and meals. Many were attracted to him for just this reason.

Even at this time, however, there was a note of altruism and generosity in Francis. On one occasion, while selling cloth at a market, he was approached by a beggar. Moved with pity for the man, he ran after him and gave him all the money from his sales.  His friends mocked him for this act, and his father was furious, but in this moment, we can see a small spark of what would become a hallmark of Francis’ ministry.

Our Lord never tells us that riches are evil in themselves.  He does, however, warn that they can become a barrier to eternal life if we place too much trust in them. What we receive materially is given not only for our own benefit, but to be shared with others.

This week, let us examine our relationship with material possessions and ask where our trust truly lies. May we use what we have generously, without allowing earthly wealth to take the place of our trust in God.
