Trust – Becoming a beggar

The Franciscan Order is known for its dedication to poverty. Although Francis was raised in wealth and comfort, he would later become known as the Poverello, the “little poor man.” He embraced a way of life that is difficult for most people and to which most are not called. What all of us can imitate, however, is his detachment from money and material possessions.

An experience in Rome helped Francis deepen his understanding of poverty. While visiting the area around St. Peter’s Basilica, he encountered beggars and was deeply moved by their condition. He chose to join them and to live among them for a time. By doing so, he strengthened his commitment to radical poverty, begging outside the basilica and living entirely from the alms he received. This was a profound act of trust that the Lord would provide for his needs.

This experience not only solidified his desire to live in poverty but also deepened his compassion for the poor and vulnerable. Care for the poor would become a defining characteristic of the Franciscan Order. Living simply, sharing resources, and detaching from worldly goods are charisms shared by all Franciscans.

Although most people are not called to live such radical poverty, we are all called to remember that we are stewards of God’s gifts, not their owners. Everything we have comes from Him, and we are entrusted with using those gifts wisely and sharing them generously.

This week, let us reflect on our relationship with material possessions. May we grow in gratitude for what God has given us and in trust that He will provide as we learn to share more freely with others.
