August is National Make-A-Will Month: Make Someday Today

Many of us know that having a Will is important, yet it’s easy to put off estate planning until someday. National Make-A-Will Month is a timely reminder to make someday today by taking a few simple steps to protect the people you love and ensure your wishes are known.

If you don’t yet have a Will or estate plan, here are three simple steps you can take today:

1. Gather important information.

Make a list of your assets, accounts and policies, other important documents, and key contacts. Having this information organized can make it easier to create an estate plan and make things much easier for your loved ones in the future.

2. Learn the basics of an estate plan.

A comprehensive estate plan often includes a Will or living trust, beneficiary designations for assets such as an IRA or life insurance policy, powers of attorney for financial and health care decisions, and an advance health care directive. Understanding how these pieces work together can help ensure that your wishes are honored.

To better understand these and other important topics, we are pleased to share FMA’s recent estate planning webinar. This presentation explores the basics of estate planning and charitable giving while providing practical guidance to help you move forward with confidence.

3. Put your plan in place.

Once you have gathered information and learned more about your options, take the next step toward creating your estate plan. Many people choose to work with an attorney or financial advisor, while others begin with free or low-cost online planning tools. Whatever approach you choose, having a plan in place will provide you and your loved ones with peace of mind.
