A Day of First Communions and Lasting Grace at Valley of the Angels

By: Fr. Joaquín, OFM

Each year, I have had the privilege of walking with our children here at Valley of the Angels as they prepare for one of the most important moments in their lives – their First Holy Communion. It’s always a beautiful journey: a year of catechism classes, daily prayers, moments of reflection, and the growing anticipation of receiving Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time.

The week before the celebration, we have First Confessions. I’ll never forget a moment at the last event. Little Rosa Elena came into the room and sat down in front of me, almost trembling. Her voice wavered as she whispered, “Padre… estoy nerviosa” (Father, I am nervous.)

“Of course you are,” I smiled, “that’s completely normal.”

I told her that many of us, adults included, feel that same fear the first time we open our hearts fully to the mercy of God. I also reminded her that this moment, though intimidating, is not meant to bring fear, but peace. She took a deep breath, folded her hands, and began. That moment of courage and faith, so small and yet so powerful, will stay with me for a long time.

When the day of First Communion finally arrives, our chapel fills with joy, light, and reverence. The children wear their best clothes, eyes shining with expectation and wonder. Each child in turn comes forward, hands folded, hearts wide open. It is a moment of deep grace, the kind of grace that leaves a lasting mark on the soul, as well as on the entire community.

As a priest, I find that these moments affirm everything we work for at Valley: not just giving children an education or a safe home but also nurturing their faith and helping them to recognize that they are loved by a God who knows them by name.

To all of you who support our mission, please know this: your generosity makes these holy moments possible. You help us feed hungry minds and nourish young souls. And when these children approach the altar for the first time, you are there with them – in spirit, in prayer, and in love.

May Christ bless you always, just as he received these children in Eucharist.

With gratitude,

Fr. Joaquín
