After Francis sold the cloth he had taken from his father’s warehouse, along with the cart and horse that carried it, his father was outraged. Fearing the punishment that awaited him, Francis hid in a cave for about a month.  When he finally returned home, dirty and disheveled, his father bound him in chains and confined him to a small storeroom.  Despite the humiliation, pain, and uncertainty of his situation, Francis continued to trust in God’s providence. 

One day, when Francis’ father, Pietro, was away on business, his mother, Pica, feeling pity for her son, released him from the chains that bound him. Francis immediately returned to the church of San Damiano, seeking refuge with the priest. Yet, this conflict was not over. When Pietro returned, he demanded that Francis restore what he had taken. This confrontation would lead to one of the most dramatic and decisive moments of Francis’s life. 

Through every trial, Francis’ trust in God did not falter. In the midst of struggle and suffering, his commitment to the mission God had given him only grew stronger.  

This week, when we face misunderstanding or hardship, let us remember Francis’ example. May we trust in God’s providence, confident that He sustains us even in our most difficult moments.
