Hi, my name is Mery. I graduated from Valley of the Angels school (Guatemala) in 2020.
During the four years since then, my life has progressed well—far beyond what my family and I could have dreamed. My parents did not have the resources to raise me, so they brought me to Valley for a better upbringing. Although it was difficult to be separated from them, I found another kind of family at the school. The other students, my teachers, the Franciscan Friars, and many caregivers showed me love, opportunity, and the grace of God.
Since graduating from high school, I received one of the best professional opportunities, which is to work for the Guatemalan army. I have risen from entry-level to becoming contract personnel. I also completed the basic soldier training course, which few women finish given its level of difficulty. I am proud of the fortitude that I discovered in myself to accomplish this.
I also pursue further education, something inspired in me at Valley. I studied in a professional voice-over course endorsed by the TGW national radio, and I am currently taking an English course at INTECAP*.
At Valley, I also grew spiritually, and we had regular Masses and received the Sacraments. These lessons and values still guide me as I become more independent. Becoming financially independent has led me to great personal and emotional growth. I believe that growth is possible because of the foundations of faith instilled in me at Valley. Its chapel, Our Lady of the Angels, is still dear to my heart.
In summary, I would like to say thank you. At Valley, we learned about the many generous people like you who send their prayers and donations. You are the reason that children and young people like me have everything we need to live well under God.
The successes that I am experiencing in my life now are possible because of your support, which provides instruction, nutrition, love, and Catholic education here in Guatemala.
*Editor’s note: INTECAP provides technical training for young people and adults in Guatemala who wish to transform their lives by updating their knowledge, building careers, or starting businesses.
About Valley of the Angels
Valley of the Angels orphanage in Guatemala is one of the missions supported by Franciscan Mission Associates.
Founded in 1993, the mission was originally established to educate and care for abandoned children. Over time, it has expanded to serve all children in need. Today, Valley provides housing, meals, and education to more than 200 children.
In addition to formal schooling, students participate in programs that support their academic, spiritual, and personal development. Through the continued work of the Franciscan friars and the generosity of supporters, Valley of the Angels remains a place where young people are given the opportunity to build stable and hopeful futures.
