At Valley of the Angels, a Bakery Becomes a Path Forward

Tucked within the peaceful grounds of Valley of the Angels in Guatemala, daily life unfolds differently than it does beyond its borders. Here, young people who have known instability, poverty, or hardship are given something rare: the space to grow, learn, and imagine a different future.

A practical skill with lasting value

Among the many programs that support this mission, one of the most unexpected is also one of the most practical: a small bakery where students learn to bake bread, cookies, and other simple goods.

What began as a vocational initiative has grown into something more.

The bakery program was created to provide young people with skills they can carry into adulthood. Through courses in baking and pastry, students gain hands-on experience that prepares them for employment and self-sufficiency. These are not abstract lessons, but practical, repeatable skills that can support a livelihood.

Supporting the mission from within

At the same time, the bakery plays an important role within the mission itself. Its products help feed children at Valley, and sales contribute to sustaining the broader work of the orphanage. What students create with their own hands becomes part of a cycle of care, supporting both their peers and the future of the mission.

One former student described her time at Valley as a period of “survival.” Today, she owns two bakeries of her own. What began as a simple introduction to baking became the foundation for a very different future.
