Reducing vulnerabilities of young people in high-risk communities

In El Salvador, exposure of young people to the influence of gangs, crime, and social violence are factors that drive irregular migration. At AGAPE, we are collaborating to reduce the vulnerabilities of young people in high-risk communities.

Undertaken with the USAID Project for Citizen Coexistence SV (PCC) and Chemonics, this project focuses on interventions to prevent secondary violence and enabling systemic change. In addition to providing programming for young people, it supports local actors in improving the local policy framework and in developing the capacity of local prevention systems to provide specific services to vulnerable groups.

Youth programming includes activities with teenagers and young people between 12 and 25 years old, focusing on sports, including taekwondo and football, as well as on the development of emotional attitudes. In June 2024, the young people had the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge acquired in their respective clubs at the first “Development of Gathering and Exchange of Experiences Between Clubs”. The event highlighted the positive impact that these activities have on the youths’ personal and social development.

Thanks to the unconditional support of parents, attendees and the Mayor of San Salvador, the gathering was a great success. Collaboration between these local actors is crucial to promoting the integration and learning of young people, who represent the future of our communities.

We will continue through this project to work to create safety and develop opportunities for young people, promoting a culture of peace and coexistence in the most vulnerable communities of San Salvador.
