Valley of the Angels: Sustaining children’s futures through enriching projects

The Valley of the Angels orphanage provides education and moral teaching. Helping ensure that our children will have sustainable futures is core to our purpose. To do this, we undertake these projects:

School

The school includes 11 grades for more than 200 at-risk children, providing comprehensive education through the practice of Franciscan values. Their formal studies include classes in English, music, computing, baseball, hockey, physical education, training in school gardens, sewing and tailoring, and baking.

To date, nine generations of children have graduated and, thanks to this, will have a future full of opportunities.

Bakery

The bakery program helps feed children while providing professional qualifications and self-sustaining funding. Young people in this program receive qualifications and training that will allow them to become entrepreneurs and ensure a source of income for themselves and their families.

The baked goods they produce generate sales that serve as a self-sustaining source of funding for the growth of our organization.

Garden

Our garden provides skills, nourishment, and income.

The children learn how to plant, grow, and harvest seeds, seedlings, plants, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and a variety of flowers. These foods are used in the children’s daily meals, providing them with the nutrition necessary to overcome chronic malnutrition and enhance the healthy development of their minds and bodies.

The garden also provides us with an additional, self-sustaining income—people purchase fresh produce and beautiful seasonal floral arrangements.

Our mission

We work in the hope that the seeds planted by children’s solid education and good moral teaching will grow and flourish, enabling them to contribute to society as Christians fully alive in Christ.

About Valley of the Angels

Valley of the Angels orphanage in Guatemala is one of the missions supported by Franciscan Mission Associates.

Founded in 1993, the mission was originally established to educate and care for abandoned children. Over time, it has expanded to serve all children in need. Today, Valley provides housing, meals, and education to more than 200 children.

In addition to formal schooling, students participate in programs that support their academic, spiritual, and personal development. Through the continued work of the Franciscan friars and the generosity of supporters, Valley of the Angels remains a place where young people are given the opportunity to build stable and hopeful futures.
